Shared Responsibility
Shared Responsibility
Shared Responsibility is a blended learning model where parents and YCS@Home educators share the responsibility of a student’s education. In this program, YCS@Home’s distance education teachers provide planning, instructional delivery, resource selection, assessment, and evaluation for selected teacher-directed courses. Meanwhile, parents oversee the Traditional Home Education portion of their child’s learning.
A YCS@Home facilitator visits twice per year to assess progress, provide feedback, and offer support to the family as needed. The level of parental involvement in the teacher-directed portion depends on the student’s grade level, learning needs, and age.
Program Details
- Families can select between 20% to 80% teacher-directed instruction, available in Online (grades 7-12) or Print-Based (grades 1-6) Distance Education.
- YCS@Home teachers are responsible for planning, instruction, and assessment of the teacher-directed courses.
- Parents oversee the home education portion, planning, instructing, and assessing those subjects taught in a Traditional Home Education format.

Grades 10-12
High school students can take between 7 to 28 credits in a shared responsibility program.
The teacher-directed percentage is calculated by dividing the number of credits by 35 (a full-time student load).
Example: 7 credits / 35 = 20%
Each student in the Shared Responsibility program can choose a combination of teacher-directed (online or print-based) courses and parent-directed learning. This program is available for Grades 1-12, with a minimum of 20% and a maximum of 80% teacher-directed instruction.
